Today, we have the honor of giving one of Chicago’s own his flowers, hailing from the south side of Chicago, <b>Common</b> formerly known as <b>Common Sense</b> is a legend in the game. From Unsigned Hype (Source Magazine) to being one Tony award away from achieving EGOT status is no easy feat and as it stands no other rapper has ever won an Emmy, Grammy and Oscar—he’s the first to ever do it and it puts him in rarified air but he’s often overlooked when the greatest of all-time rappers are discussed.
His debut album is considered a classic today but that wasn’t the case when it first released in 1992 produced by <b>NO ID</b>, <b>Twilite Tone</b> and the <b>Beatnuts</b> it had no big name features, he was almost the first rapper to go platinum without a feature word to Cole.
It’s safe to say that at 31 years old, <b>Can I Borrow A Dollar?</b> has aged beautifully, now an industry veteran, Common is as relevant today as he was when he first burst unto the scene and that is why we have partnered with him to release a Can I Borrow A Dollar? <b>Inspired 33 HI</b>.
We chose this album specifically not only because it was his debut but because the 33 HI also appears on the album cover. The 33 HI features a black leather upper with royal blue accenting and sits atop a gum sole but what really sets this shoe apart is that it features a colorful stitched pattern all throughout the shoe to represent the road map of the United States featured on the album cover. As Common explained to us the reason he had a road map of the United States on the album cover was because “I had cats from the East Coast on here and cats from the West Coast, that’s what Hip Hop just was at that time and as a Chicago artist I wanted to say hey, can I get a piece of this? So thats what Can I Borrow a Dollar? Was”.
In a full circle moment, the Can I Borrow A Dollar? 33 HI was designed with the help of <i>Marc Davis</i> (a childhood friend of Common) who’s also on the album cover and <i>Pritt Kalsi</i> aka <i>Busy Bodies</i>. The Can I Borrow A Dollar? 33 HI is now available in limited quantities in sizes 5-16 exclusively on ewingathletics.com so borrow as many dollars as you need because once these sell out they’re gone for good. NimbleA. Say You'll Be Mine / B. Your Love Makes Me Crazy
Don Blackman is a truly iconic, cult artist. A pianist, songwriter, producer, and vocalist from New York he is a mystical figure for record collectors, one of those artists where if you found an old dusty record with Don's name on it, you'd buy it on sight. Hip-hop heads, jazz, funk, disco, rare groove, and soul fans all share a love for his music, it seems to possess a quality that resonates with a wide spectrum of music lovers. Don is best known for his 1982 magnum-opus, the eponymous album released on Arista GRP. It featured the all-time classics 'Heart's Desire' and 'Holding You, Loving You', and is consistently remarkable throughout. He also collaborated with other greats such as Bernard Wright, Weldon Irvine, Roy Ayers, and Lenny White.
We couldn't quite believe it when Chicago DJ/digger/producer, Marc Davis (Black Pegasus), told us he had heard of a vault of unreleased Don Blackman material. Marc had reached out to Don Blackman's children, Irene and Kyle, in 2019, building a relationship with Kyle with whom he shared a musical affinity. To Marc's delight, Kyle confirmed that there was a treasure trove of Don’s music that had never seen the light of day. As Kyle described it, “In 2013, shortly after my dad’s passing, my sister and I collected all of his possessions and put them in a storage unit. After 2 years I finally got back into the groove of things and went through the unit. I came across forty years’ worth of music history. Hundreds of cassettes, CDs, Disks, reel-to-reels, paperwork, photos and VHS tapes. It took about ten years to organise and digitise everything. All of this magic was almost thrown away in the trash, never to be seen, never to be heard forever.”
Two tracks were selected, 'Your Love Makes Me Crazy' and 'Say You'll Be Mine'. 'Your Love Makes Me Crazy' is as funky as it gets, with infectiously catchy vocal hooks, and a serious jam, whereas ‘Say You’ll Be Mine’ is a classy, soulful boogie, instrumental number, that shows off Don’s masterful piano playing. Both tracks warrant full attention and capture a genius at work. He was also a one-man show when it came to production. He played all of the instruments and emulated the sounds of different instruments through patches on his keyboard. He recorded these tunes in his home studio in South Jamaica, Queens, New York City.
On first hearing the tracks, Marc knew he wanted to extend the songs and enlisted fellow Chicago legend, Tone B. Nimble, to work on the project with him. Their extension/edit of the songs was conducted in a way that was respectful and true to how the tracks were originally recorded by Don. They extended and re-sequenced the groovy parts of the songs organically for the DJs and dancers.
In Marc's words, "Don Blackman was a true musician and an awesome songwriter. The beauty in it is many people are just now discovering him and his music which helps keep his legacy alive."
A huge thank you to Kyle, Irene, Marc, and Tone for allowing us the honour to release these raw-soulful nuggets from a true master of his craft. The final words on this release are best coming from Kyle…
“We are very excited and thrilled to continue to share all of this unreleased magic with the world. We hope that this music will help, heal, and inspire a new generation of artists to never give up, and to strive for what their hearts desire.”
RIP Don Blackman, your light shines on.

A-side 'Disco' is a groovy, funky, horn-heavy affair; a sumptuously string-laden, orchestrated blend of righteous gospel-soul, Philadelphia International style proto-disco and grooves reminiscent of those frequently employed on Steely Dan's most up-beat moments. 'Beat Down' meanwhile is a jaunty, percussive and sun-soaked slab of dancefloor-ready Latin jazz that speeds up as it goes along. The jazz dancers will love it!

Featuring two under-the-radar disco / gospel fusion tracks that have been given a new lease of life courtesy of these masters of their craft.
We first came to know Marc through his always on-point Black Pegasus record label, which he’s been running since 2006. As a renowned international DJ, record collector, and an integral part of Chicago's underground music scene, we knew anything he sent our way was going to be serious and he didn’t disappoint. Joining forces with Sadar Bahar (Soul in the Hole), who is himself a gospel and disco legend and a DJ's DJ favourite across the globe, they dug deep and put us onto two absolute gems from their beloved collections. As DJs who play a wide range of genres, their ability to spot the real heat within any sound has placed them at the top of their game. As Sadar puts it, "We are always digging for records and these fit the criteria of disco and happen to be gospel”.
First up is the feel-good joint 'I'm So Happy' by Fountain of Life Joy Choir Under The Direction of Kevin Yancy. Originally released in 1978 on a subsidiary label of T.K. Productions entitled Gospel Roots, the clue is in the title with this one. It's an unadulterated, uplifting, joyous dancer. Marc and Sadar’s fizzing edit brings out the best elements of the song and extends them. Working the addictive vocal hooks and building the funky instrumental grooves produces a spirit-lifting mood that is bursting with enough energy to light a fire under any dancefloor.
'Optical Illusion' on the flip, takes the tempo down, but doesn’t let up on the vigour. It’s a driving, stomping anthem that features another lung-busting vocal performance. Working with a live recording of Rev. Charles H. Nicks and The Baptist Assembly Of Free Spirit Churches Mass Choir, this one proves to be the perfect accompaniment to the ecstatic vibe of the A-side. The duo has condensed and heightened the drama of the song and added some light-touch production elements to clean up and enhance the sound. We guarantee this will be filtering its way into the sets of discerning DJs worldwide.
Marc described the selections best when he succinctly put it like this, “We both knew these were two heaters on our first listen”.
We completely agree, and with recording and engineering contributions from Tone B. Nimble (Soul Is My Salvation) and Rahaan, here we have Chicago royalty creating an unmissable release that celebrates the crossover of dance music with the musical tra
ditions of the church.

<br />
Let's take it back 25 years ago on Chicago's south east side on 87th street where you have up and coming M.C. <b>Common Sense </b>recording his debut album with future hip hop music production legends <b>Twilight Tone </b>and<b> No I.D.</b><br />
<br />
<b>Can I Borrow A Dollar</b> the debut album heralded a new hardcore jazz sound with non orthodox lyrical imagery and officially putting <b>Chicago</b> on the rap music map! But just like most albums some songs make the final cut while others disappear into obscurity never to be heard.<br />
<br />
Luckily <b>Marc Davis</b>, child hood friend of Common Sense now known as <b>Common</b> preserved one of the only recordings of the original <b>Charms Alarm</b> and the <b>U.A.C. Free Style.</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Now for the first time these holy Grail songs are debuting on <b>Black Pegasus Records </b>on a super limited edition colored <b>7inch</b> and part of the newly formed <b>Seven Sense Series. </b> The new series will be unreleased demos from Common and his original music family and spear headed by <b>Marc Davis</b> and original U.A.C. member <b>David "Moe" Grant. </b><br />

In 2009 while <b>Marc Davis </b>was over in <b>Snickars Record shop </b>in<b> Stockholm, Sweden</b> digging for tunes he ran across a great spirit in the name of <b>Julian Wareing.</b> Marc was impressed by Julian's knowledge of Chicago's DJ's, specifically<b> Ron Hardy</b> and the legendary <b>Music Box club.</b><br />
<br style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica;" />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica";">"I was thinking how does a young cat from Sweden know about <b>Ron Hardy</b>"? says Marc. Since 2006 <b>Marc Davis</b> and his record label<b> Black Pegasus</b> has released a string of limited edition vinyl smashes. The catalogue ranges from previously unreleased golden era hip hop 7 inches, to rare and funky well sought-after disco 12 inches. From EP's to LP's Black Pegasus’ boutique style distribution arm reaches a world wide demographic of rare vinyl collectors, enthusiasts and die hard vinyl only DJ's. The records sound warm and phat and look distinct with it's black winged horse logo, often colored vinyl and numbered based on the amount of copies pressed for it's release. Black Pegasus' dropped hot joints<br />
by <b>Tim Dog, UltraMagnetic MC'S, MF 911, Stedy Serv, Fully G, Mika Snickars, Sadar Bahar, East Of The Rock, Tone B. Nimble</b> just to name a few. It is rumored the first Black Pegasus' <b>Ultra 7 Series </b>release<b> Ultra Magnetic MC'S Ain’t IT Good To You (Unreleased Paul C. Edit)</b> Test Press sold for over $3000 Dollars!<br />
The labels face, sound and direction is spearheaded by Marc Davis. His passion for tracking down music off old 2 inch reel to reels, rare Acetates, and old demo tapes is what fuels the Black Pegasus movement. As well as being an all star record collector of jazz fusion, disco Boogie, Brazilian and African grooves Marc is a renowned international DJ. He is the first DJ from Chicago to spin eclectic sets of downtempo and up tempo eclectic rare grooves in some of the most under the radar and taste maker European clubs and festivals during the late 90’s until present.<br />
This opened the door for other Chicago heavy weight DJ's as <b>Sadar Bahar (Soul In The Hole), Mark Grusane (Mr. Peabody Records), Rahaan (Street Edits), Zernel (Grimey Records).</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b> </b>Marc's DJ history can be traced back to the early 80's growing up in Chicago's south east side hearing and watching pioneers <b>Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles, Steve Hurley </b>as well as practicing his skills with child hood friend and legendary producer <b>No ID (Jay Z, Common, Kanye West game).</b><br />

<br />
300 Colored & Numbered Limited Edition<br />
<br />
Hip hop music innovator and hard rock funk scientist DJ Moe Love is bringing the true UltraMagnetic sound. Before the Madd Lib, and J-Dilla movement, nothing was moving funkier and faster in the golden era then UltraMagnetic MC's!! In the 80's on the "nine" block on Washington Avenue in the south Bronx at Moe's cousin's <b>Patrick</b> and <b>Cedric "Ced-Gee" Miller's</b> house aka Ultra-Lab, is where Moe Love found his calling as a beat digger, DJ and Producer.<br />
<br />
Simultaneously He watched the formation of krs One and Scott La Rock go from the Celebrity Three to Boogie Down Productions,while watching his cousin Ced-Gee produce B.D.P.'s "Criminal Minded" album to aligning with <b>Ced-Gee</b>, <b>Kool Keith</b>, <b>T.R. Love</b> and <b>Original Ronnie T</b>. to form UltraMagnetic MC's. <br />
<br />
Moe Love's early passion for record digging consisted of rare jazz,funk and soul breaks but also the odd sound library and spoken word records is what helped shape the UltraMagnetic sound!! Moe Love's sample chops and mastery of the SP 1200 is unmatched and distinctly funky along with his trademark scratches is what keeps the essence of the hip-hop on fire.<br />
<br />
Moe Love's sound can be heard on many classics from <b>UltraMagnetic MC'S</b>,<b> Tim Dog</b>, <b>King Tee</b>, <b>BeastieBoys</b>, <b>Dr. Dooom</b>, <b>Slaughter House Cartel, Trick</b>y, <b>Demagogue</b> and the <b>Prodigy</b>, as well in video games by E.A. Sports and Rock Star and block buster movie <b>Charlie's Angels</b>.<br />
<br />
Diggin In The Tapes/I Ain't Dead Yet picks up where the UltraMagnetic MC's Four Horsemen album left off. It's a collection of unheard SP 1200 floppy discs recorded to cassette tape originally then professionally mixed and mastered to wax! <br />
The album sounds so organically dope you understand Moe's importance in Ultra. Moe Love adds his classic rugged scratches,cuts and left field sounds, over slick chopped saucy sweet grooves layered over hard concrete drums.<br />
<br />
This album is a journey from the silver wall papered Ultra Lab days in the Bronx to his Forte Greene Brooklyn park jam experiences. This album is highly anticipated and brings the true heads who have been craving the original UltraMagnetic sound to the table!!<br />
<br />
Limited colored vinyl pressing, 300 only. This will be one of those records that will find a place in your collection under timeless classic.<br />

<b><i>ULTRA 7EVEN BP702</i></b> SATURDAY APRIL 18TH 2015 RECORD STORE DAY HOLY GRAIL RELEASE!!<br />
<iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/125222927" width="500" height="281" frameborder="0" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen></iframe> <p><a href="https://vimeo.com/125222927">TR LOVE'S 45 SERIES - TIM DOG OUT 18.04.2015 RECORD STORE DAY</a> from <a href="https://vimeo.com/user1584656">pritt</a> on <a href="https://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p><br />
<br />
Flashback to 1990 and <b>UltraMagnetic MC'S</b> are back in the Bronx after an incredible show at Brixton Academy in London, U.K. where they introduced there newest member Timothy <b>Tim Dog</b> Blair to the die hard cult European audience. <b>Tim Dog's</b> mega buzz from his opening debut verse on Ultra's "A Chorus Line" put him on the A&R radar from everyone from Def Jam's Russell Simmons, Andre Harrell at Uptown to Chris Swartz at Ruff House. <br />
<br />
<b> Tim Dog's</b> hunger to prove he was more then just one verse landed him and "producer of the year" <b>Ced-Gee</b> and <b>T.R. Love</b> "The Ultra-lab technician" back in the Ultra-lab studio to record Tim's demo. This demo not only secured the<br />
"hardcore Master's" record deal but it show cased the dynamic <b>Fuck Compton</b> which eventually gave the west coast a super kick in the ass and ignited the legendary east coast vs west coast hip hop war!!<br />
<br />
This obscure demo also housed two very dope innovative tracks, "<b>Suckers Never Play Me</b>" and "<b>It's My Time</b>"!! These two butters are the latest <b>Black Pegasus</b>' <b>Ultra 7 release, BP702</b>. In classic golden era fashion the masters of the SP 1200 Ced-Gee and T.R. come with uptempo break beats topped with saucey groove chops and a pinch of hardcore cuts and scratches courtesy of DJ I-Roc and T.R. Love. "<b>Suckers Never Play Me</b>" a revved up fast song that borrows a quote from <b>Chuck D</b>. Of <b>Public Enemy</b> for the chorus, while Tim Dog spits braggadocio triple cadence metaphor letting wack MC's know he can't be fucked with! The flip side "It's My Time" uses the park jam break beat "Assembly Line" by the Commodores finds Tim Dog slaying his lyrical competition as well dropping positive life lesson jewels!!<br />
<br />
This <b>300 copy limited edition, orange vinyl 7inch release</b> is by far Black Pegasus best release to date!! The real Tim Dog and Ultramagnetic heads now have another classic to add to the crates! Tim Dog may be gone in the physical but his musical catalog is immortal!!<br />

<i>MARC DAVIS AND HIS LABEL BLACK PEGASUS CHANGES CHANNELS FOR IT'S LATEST VINYL RELEASE. BP701 IS NOT A HOLY GRAIL HIP HOP GEM BUT RATHER AN OBSCURE DISCO FUNK MONSTER!!!<br />
TO FULLY UNDERSTAND THIS RELEASE YOU HAVE TO KNOW THE STORY THAT ACOMPANIES THIS RECORD.<br />
<br />
THE STORY DOESN'T BEGIN IN CHICAGO, NEW YORK OR EVEN THE UNITED STATES. IT BEGINS IN SCANDINAVIA, EUROPE, MORE SPECIFICALLY STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN.</i><br />
<br />
Stockholm, the city known for great Swedish meatballs, beautiful women, classic architecture and Mika Snickars!! Mika Snickars, the all star vinyl collector, DMC Champion, producer, re-editing king and owner of Snickars Records vinyl shop!! For years Mika has been selling vinyl records of hip hop, disco, rare groove, break beats, jazz fusion, techno, and house to mostly everyone who is a player in the vinyl music game. He has sold records to everyone from Biz Markie, DJ Harvey, Cut Chemist & DJ Numark (Jurassic 5), DJ Shadow, Daniel Wang, Danny Krivit, Theo Parrish, and Sadar Bahar to name a few.<i></i><br />
<br />
Mika's humbleness and DJ skills speaks volumes throughout Sweden, Scandinavia and to vinyl collectors world wide.<br />
In 2010 Mika was digging for records in the Reykjavik,Iceland and discovered two very dusted, rare Styrene 7 inch acetates. They both hadn't been played very much and weren't dance floor friendly and still had an audio life line before they were to become some ones drink coasters. <br />
<br />
Mika took them home to his lab and flipped two re-edits smoother then rice and beans!! His old school tape cut and paste takes it to the Walter Gibbons days when DJ's tested there rare mixes directly on the dance floors! Testing it for the dance floors is what Mika sought out to do by pressing up three acetates at Timmion's studio in Helsinki Finland.<br />
<br />
These three acetates gained a cult audience buzz amongst underground disco and rare groove collectors, DJ's and non wall flower people on the dance floor!! It became an anthem at Stockholm's underground disco & House party the LightHouse by resident DJ, Julian Wareing.<br />
<br />

In 2012 while Black Pegasus' Marc Davis was on a DJ tour in Stockholm, Mika played the acetate for him and they decided to release it on the Black Pegasus imprint when the time was correct.<br />
<br />
In the summer of this year; 2014, four white label test presses had been pressed up of the Kong Disco EP and one copy given to Chicago legend Sadar Bahar for his European/Japanese tour. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvwC8FK8rSse6xIwccE9GQ1l0zuUKT9F2pLHuLRtsCGfIv2NISCIxqsE-24o99Tjr6HYcqhyphenhyphenLKdJRk7Mvfea1cIFNKV8fHOjBdX1VRrchOzv6w5jcLPufurOx1VUyj8aE9abgmop4JrGrg/s1600/ATT_1410893567327_IMG_20140716_194123.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvwC8FK8rSse6xIwccE9GQ1l0zuUKT9F2pLHuLRtsCGfIv2NISCIxqsE-24o99Tjr6HYcqhyphenhyphenLKdJRk7Mvfea1cIFNKV8fHOjBdX1VRrchOzv6w5jcLPufurOx1VUyj8aE9abgmop4JrGrg/s640/ATT_1410893567327_IMG_20140716_194123.jpg" /></a></div>In July 2014 Sadar debuted the Kong Disco track at Giles Peterson's incredible World Wide Festival in Sete, France in front of more then 10,000 lovers of great music!! You can see the organic energy from the dancers hearing the hypnotic piano soul grove track and <br />
you realize this tune is something special!! From Sete France to Osaka Japan Sadar continued playing "Kong Disco" and the B-side Disco Monster "What Goes Around" and emails continued to pour in from disco nerds, DJ's and record shop buyers about when is the record officially dropping and when can they purchase!!<br />
<br />
Well Here it is the official yellow vinyl release limited to 200 copies!!<br />

<br />
<b>Marc Davis</b> and his label Black Pegasus link up with his big homie <b>T.R. Love</b> from legendary <br />
UltraMagnetic MC's and form the <b>Ultra 7 Series on Black Pegasus</b>!!<br />
<br />
T.R. Love the MC/DJ/Producer rat pack, known for collecting rare LP's, 45's, cassettes, VHS and reel to reel tapes digs deep in the Ultra Lab vaults and unearths a 1988 golden age gem by his crew <br />
UltraMagnetic!! "Aint It Good To You", the unreleased <b>Paul C</b>.(McKasty) mix and edit!! That's right a different mix so dope you can't believe it didn't make the final Critical Beatdown cut!<br />
<br />
Just like the album version it uses the Manzel "Jump Street" sample, but this time around TR and Ced-Gee chopped and programed it slightly different on the SP1200. The track is sped up a bit faster and adds more of the soulful parts from the break beat. As incredible as the programming is the real power of this record comes from late all-star engineer/producer Paul C.'s mixing and editing of this Holy Grail.<br />
<br />
Once again Paul C.'s innovative 808 bass sounds are still damaging ear canals while he manages to add a slight twist with Ultra incredible drops (different from the album) that are perfectly timed and bring out the best of Kool Keith and Ced-Gee's scientific flow!! When you hear the verse where Kool Keith lyrically insults the great Rakim with "I see your balls of clay with x vision/I'm a scientist your satelights are weak/they get dimmer every time I speak" you really feel the wrath of Ultra!! The Sweet vocal side and the triple O.G. instrumental makes this unseen release a true Ultra sure shot!<br />
